"Connected"

My most recently finished painting was dreamed up while on holiday last Christmas.  We were at the fabulous Woodford Folk Festival, a truly wonderful place for the whole family.  I love how being immersed in a culturally rich environment gets the creative juices flowing!

FOREST FANTASY - "ONCE IN A BLOOD MOON"

Taking a break from painting Dragonflies, I am heading in the direction of some of my favourite things. This painting had been brewing in my mind's eye for awhile until I thought I'd better just go for it.  Of course my paintings generally have a bit of their own Free Will and evolve to something a bit different to what I had imagined.  But that is the joy of art, painting and creating.

I have long held a love and fascination for our rainforest giants....the Strangler Figs and wanted one to be a main subject in this painting.

With all the rain we are currently getting here  in Queensland, I am noticing alot of wee fairy seats.....Mushrooms......popping out of the ground.  I just love these delicate little plants and also wanted them to be another focal point.

Of course the Moon is another favourite of mine and this Blood Moon calls on a memory I have from a camping trip to Coochie Mudlo Island (over 20 years ago) where I saw a giant red moon-rise which looked so much like a sunrise.....totally awesome!

FOREST FANTASY - "REVERENCE FOR HER"

Another tribute to the Moon........oh how I love her.  I can just stand there absorbing her light and smiling at how beautiful she is at every stage of her cycle, but especially when she's full.  It's amazing how much is affected by the power of the moon and the subtle changes in behaviour I see in some people (although if you ask a scientist, they'll probably laugh).

BUTTERFLIES OF BRISBANE - "LACED FRITILLARY "

About a year or so ago I came across a lady who lives up the Northside of Brisbane. She had recently bought a business that grows plants to attract Butterflies. I went up for a visit and purchased the plant in this painting as well as a couple of others. This meeting then prompted me to start a series of paintings on the Butterflies of Brisbane and their Host Plants.

I have read that the Laced Fritillary is extremely rare with it's status being Critically Endangered.

Whilst up at the Woodford Folk Festival this Christmas I attended a workshop led by an intriguing lady called Helen Schwenke. Helen co-authored a book called "Create More Butterflies" which gives information on Butterflies and their Host Plants for the Greater Brisbane Region.......I love this book! I asked Helen if over the many years that she has been involved with butterflies if she has ever seen one of these butterflies. Unfortunately her answer was no.........sad indeed :o(

So hopefully my art will help bring this to the attention of more people and they may help to bring back some habitat for this beauiful flying flower. It would be very sad indeed to lose another lovely wee creature forever!

FOREST FANTASY - "MOONLIT FAIRY TREE"

My omnipresent fascination with the Moon comes out again in this work, alongside my love of all things that Mother Nature has given us. To me there seems to be a Wisdom and Strength in Trees, I am always on the lookout for awesome specimens that I can share through my art.

I have always believed in fairies and beings from the other realm........after all, there are too many stories about them for them not to be real...........right?!

I have also had the great fortune of discovering some amazing works of art in the form of Doors whilst on my travels. The Fairy Door in this painting was inspired by a photo I took recently while in Krakow, Poland

FOREST FANTASY - "FAIRY TREE"

This painting started out just as a moonlit sunset with a tree and evolved into a whimsical fairy tree with curly branches and a fairy door, then the fairy made an appearance.  Up until now I have never really tried to draw people or people-like creatures, but that is slowly changing and practice will make perfect.  They say that drawing the human form is one of the hardest things to master.........I'll get there.

I used retarder medium experimentally to produce the cloud-like formations and I'm pleased with the effect it created.  I love the colour combination chosen for the background, I think it works nicely.

BUTTERFLIES OF BRISBANE - "LEAFWING & LOVE FLOWER"

Flying Flowers......I have described butterflies as such and I have also read elsewhere of the same description.  I love my garden and how it provides a green magnet for these sweet wee creatures, I just can't get enough of them.
Although I have previously started a butterfly series, this new series is specific to Brisbane Butterflies and their Host Plants and originated from my discovery of a lovely lady called Jo who's in the business of Butterflies.  She grows and sells butterfly host plant as well as a lovely book called "Create More Butterflies" by Frank Jordan and Helen Schwenke.  I first discovered this book at the local Library but was unable to find any book store (online or otherwise) that had any in stock to purchase.  And then I found Jo.......so if you like this book, the only place to get it is from Jo or secondhand (I guess).

SERENDIPITY

This painting started out as a drawing of a mushroom on it's own and evolved to include a few of my other favourite things.  I have always had a fascination with mushrooms and the way they just appear in random places after a good bit of rain.  As a child I always hoped to find a ring of mushrooms that had held host to a fairy party the night before......I think I only ever found one!
The field of dandelions was inspired by the masses of them I have been seeing around my neighbourhood over the past few weeks, while either walking to work or walking for exercise.  They have been a delight to see with their little yellow heads blanketing the previously unexciting grass.  Unfortunately though, I have noticed a lack of bees, totally unlike the amount seen when I was little and sitting in the middle of clover patches......very worrying indeed.
Then of course the dragonflies, fairy and moon just begged to be added!

THREATENED WILDLIFE

This painting started it's life when I attended a painting workshop at the local library, in the hope of learning some new skills.  The subject wasn't my choice, but something the teacher had selected for everyone to paint.  I did struggle with finishing this painting, however I was pretty happy how it turned out in the end.  Lesson learnt - paint what I love and choose myself (unless of course I am doing a commission for someone).

The Glossy Black Cockatoo is a member of the "Threatened Wildlife Club of Logan" the city I live in.  So unfortunatley you would be lucky to see one of these guys.  I have lived in this area for nearly 16 years and I have never seen one!

SNUG AS A BUG

My appreciation for our most famous icon was enhanced by my experiences while working at the Daisy Hill Koala Centre.  I learnt of their behaviour, ecology and endearing qualities, but more importantly the omnipresent (man-made) threats affecting their survival.
So I'm going to dedicate a series of painting to these totally unique creatures of ours.  I hope it inspires you to learn a little bit more about them and what you might do to help........ http://www.savethekoala.com/

ULYSSES

I love butterflies myself, however I painted this picture as a gift for my Nan who turned 88 on 29 January.  I remembered that she had asked me ages ago to paint her a Dunk Island Butterfly, so I thought a birthday was the perfect opportunity to make good my promise!
Butterflies to me are like flying flowers.  Everyday without fail I see them gliding through my garden on their endless journey for just the right plant to visit........they never fail to bring a smile to my face.
So "Ulysses" is my first painting for 2011.
